Archival Assembly #2
Found Futures II: Brigada Archivología Chile / Exil DDR
—
In October 2022, Angelika Levi began working with the German Federal Archives on a research project about 23 reels of films by the Chilean filmmaker Alvaro Ramirez, part of a seminar at the HfG Offenbach. Since then, more than 200 film cans and documents about Chile have turned up in the Federal Archives, which originally stem from the State Film Archive of the GDR. These include the newly digitized film EXIL, which had been produced by the State Film Documentation for archival purposes. It features conversations with exiles about their escape from Chile and their situation in the GDR. In the Federal Archives there is also a 35mm print of ICH WAR, ICH BIN, ICH WERDE SEIN (I was, I am, I will be) by the GDR documentary filmmaker duo Walter Heynowski and Gerhard Scheumann, shot shortly after the 1973 coup in Chile in a prison camp in the Atacama Desert.
The panel discusses these findings from out of the recesses of German-German history. With Angelika Levi, students at the HfG Offenbach, Adelheid Heftberger and Jan Wetzel (Federal Archives), Marcelo Morales Cortés (Cineteca Nacional de Chile), Stefanie Eckert (DEFA-Stiftung), and the Chilean filmmaker Alejandra Carmona Cannobbio (Universidad de Chile).
